"An Insight to the Future Geodetically Constrained Models of

Earthquake Potential in South and South-East Iran"

Dr. Ing. Amir Abolghasem

Modern satellite imaging and positioning techniques turned to be indispensable parts of studying crustal deformation of different mechanisms, from high frequency co-seismic motions in time scales of seconds to minutes, to inter-seismic deformations of decades to centuries and post-glacial rebound of the order of several millenniums.

Increasing storage and processing power, on the other hand, enable scientists to apply sophisticated mathematics and physics to establish models of crustal deformation dynamics that are constrained by geodetically derived kinematics. These models give valuable hints on spatial and temporal variations of strain accumulation and stress distribution in actively deformating zones.

In spite of available sparse geodetic data in south and south-east Iran, this deforming zone is not well studied. This talk gives an insight into how the available data can constrain models of strain and stress distribution to estimate strain accumulation, stress distribution and potential of strong earthquakes in this actively deforming zone.
