Abstract:
Power lines are important due to transferring electricity from power plants to power consumables. Due to the importance of the electricity in modern life, tracking and mapping them is vital to supply electricity to cities. In this case, Mobile Terrestrial Laser Scanner (MTLS) could be an efficient method to rapidly acquire geometrical information from power lines. However, since the manually extracting needed information from MTLS point clouds is challenging and laborer, researchers have been focusing on developing automated techniques. This research proposes a novel method for automatic extraction of power lines from MTLS point clouds. The proposed algorithm is composed of three consecutive steps of pre-processing, cable area detection, and pole extraction. In which, after pre-processing candidate areas for power line poles are specified based on Hough Transform algorithm. Then, applying horizontal and vertical density information on this areas, poles of power lines are extracted. To evaluate the performance of this method, it was tested on sample data and the results demonstrated 98% and 100% completeness and correctness, respectively.
