Abstract:
In this study we consider contribution of earthquakes to the deformation of Zagros province and compare the different parts of the province from seismicity and density of earthquakes. The mathematical tool used in this research is based on calculations of moment rate. The seismic moment rate is the average amount of energy releases from the tectonic province in each year. The geodetic moment rate is also the average amount of energy that each year is spent on making deformation in Zagros. The ratio of these two parameters indicates the contribution of earthquakes to the creation of deformation in Zagros, which, according to calculations, is estimated to be 13.06%. In addition, along with the information obtained from moments, we can obtain the shear strain rate and dilation strain rate from strain rate tensors, which show the volumetric reduction and deformation rate in different parts of Zagros. The data used in this study include the focal coordinates of earthquakes with their magnitude and velocity vectors of Zagros geodynamic network, which are used to calculate the seismic and geodetic moment rates.
